Think You Might Have Hail Damage?

Recent storm? Walk around your house and look for any of these signs. If you spot two or more, it’s time for a complimentary on-roof inspection — insurance claims have time limits, and unaddressed damage gets worse.

Look For These Warning Signs:

1
Loose granules in your gutters or at downspout exits.Look for what resembles coarse, dark sand. Some granule loss is normal, but a buildup after a storm signals the shingles have been impacted.
2
Dents in soft metal: gutters, downspouts, vents, AC fins.If hail dented the metal around your house, it hit your roof with the same force — even if the shingles look fine from the ground.
3
Dark spots or random “bruise” marks on shingles.Visible from upstairs windows or with binoculars. These are spots where hail crushed the asphalt mat beneath the granules.
4
Missing, lifted, or cracked shingles.Wind events can break the adhesive seals between shingles. Once that seal breaks, the next storm can rip them free entirely.
5
Bent or damaged flashing around chimneys, vents, valleys.Flashing is often the first thing to fail in a storm. Damaged flashing causes leaks even when shingles look perfectly intact.
6
New interior water stains, leaks, or ceiling discoloration. If water is reaching the inside of the home, the roof envelope has failed somewhere. Don’t wait — damage gets worse with every rain.

See two or more of these? It’s worth getting a complimentary inspection.

This checklist is a guide, not a diagnosis. A real assessment requires an on-roof inspection by a licensed contractor — which we provide at no charge.

What Damage Looks Like

Common Signs of Hail & Storm Damage

Hail damage isn’t always obvious from the ground. Some of the costliest damage looks like nothing at all until granules wash off, the underlayment fails, and a leak appears months later. Here’s what we look for during an inspection:

Bruised Shingles

Dark, soft spots where hail crushed the asphalt mat beneath the granules. Often invisible from the ground; obvious to a hand inspection. These are the strongest indicator of a fresh hail strike and the most insurable.

Granule Loss

Bare patches where the protective ceramic granules have been knocked off. Look in your gutters: if they’re full of what looks like coarse sand, your roof is shedding its UV protection. Without granules, asphalt shingles deteriorate fast.

Dented Soft Metal

Hail leaves dents in gutters, downspouts, roof vents, flashing, and AC condenser fins. If the soft metal around the house is dented, the roof was hit with the same force — even if the shingles look fine from the ground.

Cracked or Split Shingles

Wind and hail can crack shingles along the lower edge. These splits open paths for water to reach the underlayment, then the deck, then the home interior. A common cause of leaks that appear weeks after the storm.

Lifted or Missing Shingles

Strong winds break the adhesive seal between shingles. Once that seal breaks, the next storm can rip the shingle free entirely. You may see lifted edges from the ground; full losses are obvious as bare patches.

Damaged Flashing

Flashing — the metal seal around chimneys, vents, valleys, and dormers — is often the first thing to fail in a storm. Damaged flashing is the leading cause of leaks even when shingles look perfectly intact.

First 24 Hours

After-Storm Checklist

What you do in the hours and days after a storm affects whether damage gets worse, whether insurance covers it, and how much you eventually pay out of pocket. Move through this list in order:

1
Stay off the roof. Roofs after a storm are slick, structurally compromised, and a leading cause of fall injuries. Inspect from the ground or an upstairs window only. Leave the rest to a licensed pro.
2
Take photos and write down what you see. Date-stamped photos of debris on the ground, dents in gutters, indoor water stains, and any visible roof damage become evidence for your insurance claim. The more, the better.
3
Check the inside. Walk every room and the attic. Look for wet spots on ceilings, drips, fresh stains, or sunlight visible through the roof deck. Even small interior signs mean water is already getting through.
4
Tarp active leaks immediately. If there’s active water intrusion, a temporary tarp protects the home until permanent repair. We provide emergency tarping; do not climb up to do it yourself.
5
Call a licensed local contractor for an inspection. Storm-chasers from out of state will start showing up within days. They are not local, not licensed in Kentucky, and gone before warranty issues surface. Use a local company you can call again next year.
6
File the insurance claim only after a professional inspection. Filing without knowing the scope means you may settle for less than the damage is worth. We document everything before you file so your claim reflects the actual damage.
7
Do not sign a contract on the spot. If anyone asks you to sign an “assignment of benefits” or contract before the adjuster has been out, walk away. Reputable contractors don’t pressure you.
Insurance Claims

How the Insurance Process Works

We’ve walked hundreds of families through storm-damage insurance claims. The process is more straightforward than most homeowners think — if you do it in the right order. Here’s what to expect:

  1. Free roof inspection. We come out, climb the roof, and document everything — with photos and measurements. You get a written report with our findings before you talk to insurance.
  2. File the claim with our report in hand. You file with your insurance carrier. Our report becomes the baseline for what damage actually exists. This step matters: many homeowners under-document and end up with smaller settlements.
  3. Adjuster visit — we’re there. When the insurance adjuster comes out, we meet them on the roof. Adjusters are not roofing experts; having a licensed contractor present means damage gets properly identified rather than missed or underpriced.
  4. Scope of work agreed. The adjuster issues a scope and estimate. We review it against what we documented and push back on anything missed. Most homeowners don’t realize this is negotiable — it is.
  5. Repair or replacement begins. Once scope is approved, we schedule the work. Materials, labor, and cleanup are all handled. Your only out-of-pocket cost is typically your deductible.
  6. Final billing handled with insurance directly. We bill the carrier; you pay your deductible. No surprise costs, no chasing checks.
